Increasingly Less Cover
Hi all!

After almost a year of not recording intuitive music sessions, this is the first trio that happened on a rainy day in the new LAB on Portugals Algarve. THE LAB is reborn 2600 km south of its original place in Germany, with less physical space, but located in the middle of nature and close to the ocean. A perfect place for cultivating an open mind for creativity.

When I moved to the south, I left behind a whole life and only took my freedom and love for creativity with me. Now I am giving in to the flow of music and life, meeting new inspiring people along the way. Drummer Dr P.A. Francis and bass player Davicci are the first two intrigued to play intuitive improvisations in THE LAB, as a trio with me, creating something from nothing. The result of this first session is “Increasingly Less”, an album with a warm and gentle flow and some surprising moments.

THE LAB Balanced - Cover

Another THE LAB release – this time it’s a piano trio on steroids. From the liner notes:

For “Balanced”, drummer Sven Kosakowski and pianist Marc Mennigmann invited bass player Lukas Keller to THE LAB in Dortmund. The recording was started and they began to let music happen without any previous arrangements or notes.
In the editing process, the pieces were only cut or shortened. This is a collection of ad hoc compositions, sound experiments, improvisations and pieces that sound like they were composed – but aren’t.

After “Welcome”, “Three Word Poems”, “Tracks” and “What We Need”, “Balanced” is THE LAB’s fifth album.

This is of course another free addition to the catalog of all my lovely subscribers.

As Above So Below Cover Art

“Welcome” is THE LAB’s fourth album dedicated to intuitive music. It documents the first time that the musicians involved played together in this constellation. They met at THE LAB in Dortmund, the recording was started and they started to create music without any previous arrangements or notes.

In the editing process, the pieces were only shortened and in some places, shakers and natural tones were added. There were no second takes or any other overdubs. So they created these more than 100 minutes collection of ad hoc compositions, sound experiments, improvisations and pieces that sound like they were composed – but aren’t.

After “Three Word Poems“, “Tracks” and “What We Need“, “Welcome” is THE LAB’s fourth album.

THE LAB „What We Need“ – new album released today!

THE LAB „What We Need“ – new album released today!

New music for your lovely people! It’s release day today and I am happy to announce the latest album of THE LAB, called „What We Need“ is available now.

This seven-track album with 61 minutes playtime started as an experimental trio recording of Karlo Wenzel on trumpet, Sven Kosakowski on drums and me on keyboards and electronics. The recordings were edited and then sent to UK bassist Steve Lawson, who added low notes and some experimental sounds. Mostly he used the same intuitive approach, just playing along to the recording and adding what the music demanded. All recordings were edited, mixed and stirred around a little, and we finally had “What We Need”.

This album is another free add to the back-catalogue of my subscribers.

Thanks for your support, no matter if you are a subscriber, purchase the album, or just spread the word of the new release!

"What We Need" album coverTHE LAB Manifest:

Create, innovate, collaborate, share.
Be yourself and let the music flow. Challenge yourself and create the unknown. Try to avoid musical habits. Improve yourself and play something new. Take risks, be prepared to fail, but always turn the mistake into something beautiful.

Make quick decisions. If something gets boring stop it or change it. Think process, not product. Give something away and tell a good story. Ignore the rules, but never play a note without a purpose. Play what you like to hear.

Be nice. Love. We are one.

Insight THE LAB – Documentary by Sven Kosakowski

A few month ago we had a creative day at THE LAB which my dear friend Sven also used to film some short impressions. Now he came up with this beautiful documentary. Camera, editing, cutting and production of this movie by Sven Kosakowski. Music by Sven Kosakowski & Marc Mennigmann.

Tears Of Gaia – new The Lab single feat. Jochen Schrumpf on guitar

Tears Of Gaia – new The Lab single feat. Jochen Schrumpf on guitar

We couldn’t wait to give you a preview of what we will release in a few weeks, so here is a first 11-minute track. The Lab session with Jochen Schrumpf was pure fun and inspiration. In the well-known “Lab” way of working, we started to play with each other without prior arrangements and set no limits to our creativity.

Caution! What you will hear is improvised music without any rules beyond the logic or inclination of the musicians involved. It may sound like fusion jazz, Avantgarde or noise to your ears, but listen deeper. There are stories hidden behind the curtain of your preception.

And why is this track named “Tears Of Gaia”?
According to the Gaia principle, living organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a synergistic and self-regulating, complex system that helps to maintain and perpetuate the conditions for life on the planet. Look around. There is something wrong. Gaia is the ancestral mother of all life, the primal Mother Earth goddess. And it seems their children refuse the gift they were given.

The Lab personnel:
Sven Kosakowski – acoustic and electric drums
Marc Mennigmann – piano, keyboards, modular synths
Ana Orias Balderas – bass
Jochen Schrumpf – guitar

This track was recorded at “The Lab” in Dortmund, Germany
Edited by Sven Kosakowski & Marc Mennigmann
Mixed & mastered by Marc Mennigmann
